Your first flying lesson — not a sightseeing ride.
A discovery flight (also called an introductory flight lesson) is the first lesson every pilot ever takes. You learn how the airplane works on the ground, then you fly it: take-off, level flight over the Hudson and the harbor, turns, and the approach back to Linden — with your instructor on the dual controls throughout.
It is designed for people with no experience at all. Some guests come because they want to become pilots. Most come because flying a plane over New York was on the list.

Plan on about two hours with us. Here is how it goes.
- Welcome at our private hangar. Park free, meet your instructor in the lounge, sign in, and get comfortable. Arrive 25 minutes before your time.
- Ground lesson. Your instructor walks you around the aircraft and explains the controls, the instruments and exactly what you will do in the air.
- You fly. Left seat, hands on the yoke. Take-off, climb-out over Linden, then New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline with your instructor guiding every step.
- Landing and debrief. Your instructor brings it back to the runway, then logs your time, answers your questions and tells you what a next lesson would look like — only if you ask.

Yes. That's the point.
The Cherokee has two full sets of controls. You fly from the left seat; your instructor sits in the right seat with the same yoke, pedals and throttle, and can take over at any moment without a word. That is what makes it safe to hand you the airplane on your first day.
Every instructor holds an FAA flight-instructor certificate. Every flight follows the same rules we fly under all year in the busiest airspace in the country.

- Driving: about 40 minutes from Lower Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel and the Turnpike; 20 minutes from Newark.
- Train: NJ Transit Northeast Corridor from Penn Station to Linden — five stops — then a short taxi or rideshare to the hangar.
- Rideshare: set your destination to the address above; the driver enters the airport grounds and follows the road to the first hangar on the left.

Change nothing and the checkout totals $637.06 for one person — that is the flight, the airport fee, all three extras, the gratuity and FareHarbor's booking fee of $36.06.

Experience time and flight time
Set aside about two hours at the airport. The lesson runs in order: ground instruction, then the flight, then a short debrief over what you did. Weather, air traffic and airspace decide the exact route on the day, and your instructor will tell you before you start.
Who can fly, and what to have with you.
- Age: 13 and up (under 18 flies with a parent or guardian's signed waiver)
- Weight: 275 lb per person; 425 lb combined for two — small aircraft have real weight-and-balance limits
- Bring: government photo ID for everyone flying, the card you booked with, flat shoes, and a logbook if you have one
- Wear: whatever is comfortable for the season; the cabin is heated and cooled
- Before you come: everyone signs our online waiver and uploads a photo ID — links arrive by email and text after booking

Every flight is weather dependent. Your instructor makes the go/no-go decision for your safety and comfort, and if the day isn't good enough we reach out before you travel and rebook you at no cost. Airspace restrictions over New York work the same way. Departure times can shift earlier or later on the day, so we don't promise a specific take-off time.

Is it really me flying?
Yes. You sit in the left seat with your hands on the yoke and your feet on the rudder pedals. An FAA-certificated flight instructor sits beside you on a full set of dual controls the whole time, so nothing depends on you — but the flying you do is real.
Do I need any experience?
None. The lesson starts from zero: how the aircraft works, what you'll feel, what your instructor will ask you to do. Guests who are nervous flyers tell us the briefing is what settled them.
What does it cost in total?
The lesson is $286 a person and Linden Airport's fee is $35 when you pay it at booking, $45 if you leave it to the day. That is $321 plus FareHarbor's booking fee, both paid online. Checkout then adds three extras that arrive already ticked — a photo album at $48, Cancellation Protection at $106 and a VIP golf cart at $31 — and presets a 20% gratuity. Change nothing and the total comes to $637.06. Untick the three and drop the gratuity and you are back to about $321 plus the booking fee. Nothing on that list is needed to fly, and the running total is on the checkout screen before you enter a card.
Can I bring someone?
Yes. Book the lesson for two: one of you flies up front with the instructor, the other rides in the back with a headset and hears everything. Or add a companion seat at checkout for a passenger who just wants the view.
What if the weather is bad?
We move you, free, to a date that works — you never lose your flight. Your instructor makes the go/no-go call for safety and comfort; if the day isn't right we'll reach out before you travel. Weather and air traffic can also shift your departure earlier or later on the day, so we never promise a specific take-off time.
What is your refund policy?
Flights are non-refundable. Plans change: with 48 hours' notice you can convert your booking into a flight credit valid for 12 months, transferable to another person. Checkout also offers Cancellation Protection at $106, and it arrives already ticked — keep it and you can cancel for any reason up to 12 hours before and get your booking back, less that fee; untick it if you would rather not.
Who can fly?
Anyone 13 and up. Under 18 needs a parent or guardian's signed waiver. Weight limits are physics, not policy: 275 lb per person and 425 lb combined for two. Bring a government photo ID.
How do I get to Linden Airport from Manhattan?
About 40 minutes by car from Lower Manhattan. By train: NJ Transit Northeast Corridor from Penn Station to Linden (five stops), then a short taxi or rideshare to the hangar. Free parking on site.
Can I log the time?
Bring a logbook and your instructor will sign it. Time flown with a certificated instructor is loggable dual instruction, so your first lesson counts toward a pilot certificate if you keep going.
Is this a helicopter?
No — a Piper Cherokee PA-28, a low-wing airplane with a closed, temperature-controlled cabin. Quieter and smoother than a helicopter, and you fly it.
